October 4, 2004—New Zealand will see its first RFID-enabled library open tomorrow in Manukau City. The project's success will be closely monitored by other libraries who expect to implement RFID themselves soon as the price of the technology falls. The project, which replaces current magnetic strip technology with far more versatile RFID tags, is expected to decrease the time it takes to locate misplaced books by 80%, providing librarians more time to help customers. Initial testing of the system has been very successful. Checkpoint System's New Zealand subsidiary provided the solution.
