Volkswagen Brazil Improves Asset Utilization and Inventory Control With RFID and IoT
RFID Journal Award 2020 Winner: Best Manufacturing Implementation. Volkswagen do Brasil produces more than 23 million vehicles, exporting over 3.7 million vehicles, and producing domestic sales in excess of 19 million units. The company has three vehicle plants and one engine plant, as well as a widespread sales and distribution network, with more than 500 dealers. In addition to launching new cars, they must maintain the spare parts of old models for at least 10 years, often turning to external suppliers to produce parts. There are approximately 60,000 assets with suppliers, whose assets and production are managed by VW. The firm is using RFID and IoT technology to control asset utilization and improve inventory control. Ceramics Manufacturer Gains Efficiency With RFID
Ceramic dinnerware manufacturer Porto Brasil Cerâmica maintains a stock of more than 980,000 items. The company has reduced the time to count items on pallets from 40 minutes to 3 minutes, after the implementation of an RFID system. The technology is enabling the firm to gain greater inventory visibility and to reduce costly shipping errors. Transforming Logistics in Steel Manufacturing With RFID
RFID Journal Award Finalist: Best Logistics/Supply Chain RFID Implementation. In 2017 Brazilian steel manufacturer Gerdau won the RFID Journal Best Logistics/Supply Chain RFID Implementation award for its use of an RFID system to cut costs and increase production. Gerdau is the largest producer of long steel in the Americas, turning millions of tons of recycled scrap into quality steel serving the construction, industrial, agricultural and automotive sectors. The firm has expanded the initial project to their Ouro Branco mill and has created an environment of automatic traceability for movement of products and equipment, with a focus on automation of the receipt processes, inventory management and loading, thus enabling the digital transformation of its logistics processes. How to Take Inventory With Drones
A California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) research project has found that an RFID-enabled unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), or drone, can read tags attached to static inventory (for example, steel drills or utility pipes) at an accuracy rate of 95 to 100 percent. The research focused on capturing data for the purpose of equipment inventory tracking in oilfields, but also included other utility-based equipment in storage yards or at construction sites. Cal Poly will demonstrate in the exhibit hall, how the system could also be used to track dynamic inventory.
