Feb 23, 2013Automotive electrical parts manufacturer, Mitsubishi Electric Automotive America (MEAA), has teamed up with Midtronics, a battery-management company, to add RFID functionality to test equipment that the parts maker's customers can utilize to gain an automated electronic record of maintenance and repair to those components. The system includes a single passive high-frequency (HF) RFID tag attached to a truck, to store the maintenance history of that vehicle's electrical system, as well as tags attached to the parts maker's components. Tags attached to components would have sufficient memory to allow each tag to store a more detailed maintenance history of the individual component to which it was attached. Dealers often return parts to the manufacturer that they claim are inoperable, but that are actually still functioning, having simply been misdiagnosed. As a result, the firm charges the dealership for these unnecessary repairs.
