Is that why the technology is faltering?

Um, actually, it's not faltering. RFID represents the future of retail. In five years, virtually all clothing will be tagged with RFID transponders. From there, the technology will expand to other areas. It is already expanding into jewelry, cosmetics and other high-value items, in fact. While retailers must make an investment in installing readers in stores and upgrading software, and while suppliers must invest in purchasing tags on an ongoing basis, the benefits for both supply chain partners far outweigh the cost.

Retailers typically see a payback within a year. (You can download our RFID Fashion Retail ROI Calculator to assess the potential benefits for your particular establishment.). Suppliers also benefit from better inventory tracking, reduced labor associated with checking orders prior to shipping, improved shipping accuracy and better supply chain visibility. There is simply no other technology that can help retailers and suppliers cost-effectively manage their complex inventories, so believe me when I tell you that RFID is the future of retail.
