Has RFID Journal conducted any studies with regard to the U.S. pharmaceutical, retail and health-care sectors?

Dear Manish,

RFID Journal does not perform market-sizing studies, so we do not have that information. Analyst firms that do conduct such studies often prefer not to provide it, because their business involves selling that type of data to their customers.

I would say that very little has been spent on RFID by pharmaceutical companies. There are some internal projects for asset tracking, but no major moves toward tracking drugs. And the health-care field has largely focused on active technology. The market has been growing, but only 5 percent of hospitals have currently deployed an RFID system.

The investment by retail, to this point, is also fairly small, but is growing. Many apparel retailers are running pilots. A few have already deployed, and are using hundreds of millions of tags. Wal-Mart Stores has spoken publicly about its deployment, but several other companies have not done so as of yet. I would expect to see retail ramp up fast in the next two years.
