Does PIE encoding emit more or fewer pulses of energy than Manchester encoding?

Pulse interval encoding (PIE) is a method of transmitting data to an RFID tag by emitting pulses of energy at varying intervals, in order to indicate the ones and zeroes of binary code stored on that tag. To answer your question, I reached out to Steve Halliday, the president of consulting firm High Tech Aid, who is an expert on RFID standards and the encoding schemes they use. Here is Steve's reply:

"As always, the answer is complicated. The short answer is yes. A PIE data-0 symbol provides the same power transfer as a Manchester symbol. A PIE data-1 symbol provides greater power delivery than a Manchester symbol. So, therefore, if a waveform mixes 0s and 1s, then a tag will get more power with PIE than with Manchester."
