July 18, 2004—The five-cent cost of RFID tags has been a stated industry goal for the last couple years. It is at that price point that item-level tagging becomes feasible for a broad range of consumer products. But the realization of five-cent tags will no doubt be pushed back if royalty fees are imposed on tag producers. The question is, how much would royalty fees affect tag price and, consequently, the overall RFID tag market?
