October 5, 2004—For every 100 articles written about RFID, 99 focus on supply chain management. But for many futurists out there, there are far more compelling uses of pervasive RFID than merely “decreased shrinkage.” Kevin Ashton, cofounder of MIT’s Auto-ID Center, considers new RFID applications all the time. How about a robot that is programmed to know the correct location of every book, remote control, and shoe in your home? It could simply roll through your house locating and replacing that darned errant sock to its appropriate place in your bottom drawer. Or consider a new recycling technique in which newspaper, plastic, and bottles would all be thrown away in the same receptacle, to be automatically sorted later at the recycling plant based on the information read from each item’s RFID tag.
