October 24, 2004—At the recent RFID China conference in Beijing, vice director of the Policy Study Office under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Zheng Xinli, encouraged Chinese businesses to involve themselves in the RFID standards-making process. He noted the disparity between China’s role as the world’s fourth largest trading power and the fact that more than 99% of the technical standards used in the country are decided upon by non-Chinese interests. The U.S. and European RFID industry are hoping that its own EPCglobal standard will be adopted in China, sure to become an enormously important player in RFID. With so much manufacturing done in China, many retailers’ supply chains literally begin there. So if a separate standard were adopted by China, it would force many companies into accomodating two different RFID standards.
