October 25, 2004—The Kanachu Hire taxicab company in Tokyo will begin offering RFID-based cashless fare payment as part of a two-month trial conducted by Japanese credit card giant JCB International. The system is called QUICPay and hopes to be successful in the city where cell phones are used more widely than credit cards. Unencumbered by common protocols of credit card payment processing, QUICPay will neither require the customer to provide his signature nor conduct slow, real-time payment authorization. If it proves successful, JCB hopes to expand the system’s reach to convenience stores and beyond.
