SMIITY, an accessible, free and mobile platform compatible with iOS and Android mobile devices, which allows regions, cities and/or monuments to communicate with tourists and citizens, arrives to Madeira. The platform was presented last Friday in Funchal, by mobinteg’s founders Fernando Pinto and Pedro Geraldes, in an event that was attended by the Regional Secretary for Economy, Tourism and Culture, Eduardo Jesus.

SMIITY provides the user, in his language, with news, events, points of interest, trails and more. Through interaction with beacons, small signal transmitters that send these contents to the user’s mobile device through Bluetooth Low Energy, these contents can be automatically presented to the user, without him having to look for them.

Madeira, in particular Funchal, will have the installation of several beacons in different parts of the city, namely in the Museum of Quinta das Cruzes and the Fort of São Tiago, providing a more dynamic and interactive experience for citizens and tourists.

In addition to being accessible, SMIITY is an inclusive solution, especially for the blind community, since it has a text-to-speech functionality, which converts text content to audio, in the language of the device.

The mobile device can also be used as an audioguide, making the user experience even more complete, rich and immersive, thus avoiding the use of additional equipment. SMIITY is available in Portugal, the United States and Italy.

Mocana Introduces IoT Security Developer Kit for Raspberry Pi to Ease Integration With Secure Cryptoprocessors

Mocana Corporation, a leading provider of industrial-strength security technology for mission-critical IoT and industrial control systems, has announced limited availability of the Mocana IoT Security Developer Kit (DevKit). The kit includes Mocana’s IoT security software modules integrated with an Infineon Technologies OPTIGA TPM chip on a Raspberry Pi, a credit card-sized computer. The kit provides developers, who may not have deep cybersecurity or cryptography expertise, with a way to simplify the notoriously difficult integration ofhardware-based security features into IoT devices.

“Expecting developers to understand the more than 3,000 pages of documentation on the proper implementation of TPM is impractical,” said Srinivas Kumar, Vice President of Engineering at Mocana. “Our DevKit provides an easy to use developer interface that greatly simplifies and accelerates the development and testing of critical IoT security functions based on hardware security – in this case a TPM chip.”

One of the world’s leading technology analyst firms predicts that more than 20 billion devices will be connected to the IoT by 2020. Along with this massive growth, comes the need for strong security that can be easily integrated into these billions of devices. The ubiquity of hardware-based security chips and the low-cost of Raspberry Pi makes the Mocana solution a perfect answer to the demands of developers and device manufacturers that want to familiarize themselves with the concepts and functionality of calling cryptographic functions implemented by a TPM.

Customized for a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B board, the Mocana IoT Security DevKit includes the following Mocana software modules:

• A secure cryptographic engine for asymmetric and symmetric ciphers.
• Secure transport for SSL, SSH and Wi-Fi (via an 802.11i supplicant).
• Secure key and certificate storage and management based on SCEP, OCSP and EST protocols.

Developers will be able to test the following functionality out of the box with sample applications included with the DevKit:

• Use the Mocana security API layer to generate TPM keypairs and leverage TPM functionalities.
• Establish SSL or SSH connections with TPM keys and certificate-based mutual authentication.
• Establish secure connectivity using an 802.11i (WPA2) supplicant to connect to a Wireless Access Point.
• Demonstrate remote attestation of the platform using a TPM-signed quote.
• Generate TPM keys and X.509 certificates based on SCEP and EST (RFC 7030) certificate management protocols.

Micron, Microsoft Announce Collaboration to Improve Internet of Things Security

Micron Technology (MU) and Microsoft has announced a collaboration that aims to address the major challenge of providing trusted computing models for IoT deployments in industrial, automotive and consumer environments. As digitization and adoption of Internet Protocol (IP) for sensors and devices becomes increasingly pervasive, cyber-security is one of the biggest challenges and barriers to the growth of IoT deployments and associated business models. The new solution utilizes a hardware ‘root of trust’ integrated into Micron’s flash memory in the IoT device along with the Microsoft Azure IoT cloud to establish a strong trusted link between that IoT device and the cloud.

At the Hannover Messe 2017, Micron has also announced a new IoT security technology called Micron Authenta that helps enable strong cryptographic device identity and device health management in flash memory. The concept of monitoring persistent memory storage is becoming more and more critical to understanding a device’s health. By using Microsoft’s support of Device Identity Composition Engine (DICE), an upcoming standard from the Trusted Computing Group (TCG), the combination of the Microsoft Azure IoT cloud and Micron Authenta Technology helps ensure that only trusted hardware gains access to the IoT cloud.

The key aspect of the combined solution is that the health and identity of an IoT device is verified in hardware on the device where critical code is typically stored. This enables more advanced functionality like hardware-based device attestation and provisioning, as well as allows an administrator to securely remediate the device if compromised in the field.

Micron’s Authenta Technology provides a unique level of protection for the lowest layers of IoT device software, starting with the boot process. The approach of utilizing existing standard flash memory sockets enables system developers to harden system level security without adding additional hardware components, leading to a more affordable and robust IoT solution. A wide range of IoT devices that use standard flash memory chips can now be enhanced to improve cyber-security using this combined approach.

In addition to the hardware, Microsoft and Micron has announced that they will offer software development kits (SDKs) that help make it easier to provide secure IoT cloud management and connectivity for new platforms and devices, as well as the ability to retrofit legacy systems.

“Microsoft and Micron are collaborating to provide customers with a unified approach to improve IoT security. This capability will speed up adoption of the latest IoT concepts by enabling customers to broaden their IoT connectivity while decreasing the investment of implementation,” said Sam George, director of Azure IoT cloud services. “Combining these technologies will enable critical security competencies to be underpinned at a low-level in both hardware and software so that users can quickly begin to add their value to these solutions without many of the resource burdens that have been repressing innovation in the industry.”

1oT Expands Cellular Connectivity Service to More Than 150 Countries Worldwide

1oT is becoming the leading global connectivity provider for Internet of Things (IoT) startups and is especially proud of its strong market presence in connected light vehicles segment. 1oT’s global SIM cards and self-service based connectivity platform called the 1oT Terminal are being used by hundreds of smart IoT startups all over the world. With this release, 1oT is not only strengthening its position among smaller and medium sized IoT device makers, but is unlocking its platform-as-a-service to large market players, including Mobile Network Operators (MNOs).

1oT is announcing three major upgrades to its service. Firstly, due to growing interest from developing countries, the company’s cellular connectivity service has expanded to extra 50 countries and is now covering more than 150 countries worldwide. 1oT is one of the few aggregators in the world providing such broad coverage and partnering with most of the top mobile carriers worldwide. Secondly, as of 1st of May 2017, 1oT starts licensing its connectivity management platform to MNOs. The first white-label pilot project has successfully been carried out by one leading European MNO. 1oT undoubtedly covers basic functionalities that today’s IoT device makers are looking from connectivity service, such as receiving real-time information about SIM sessions, detecting the location of SIMs, setting data limits and being able to integrate all functionalities with their systems & applications via API. Moreover, end-clients can set up notifications and alerts for detecting behavioural abnormalities with their SIMs. Research shows that the 1oT Terminal has saved end-clients 32% in mobile data traffic by applying notifications. From the administrative side of functionality, MNOs can set up custom pricing plans and fully automate billing for their end-clients.

According to Märt Kroodo, the effective, automated and self-service based management platform takes a huge weight off from labour intense operations and sets a strong support level for dropping mobile data prices. In addition to MNOs and MVNOs, the 1oT Terminal is also a good fit for high-data-volume clients providing full service to their end-clients.

Thirdly, the 1oT Terminal now holds many value-adding services and apps. Most importantly, the 1oT Terminal can be applied as a supreme platform of many other existing connectivity platforms. STMicroelectronics Intros Cloud-Connectable Kit for IoT Device Development

The new high-connectivity STM32L4 IoT Discovery kit (B-L475E-IOT01A) from STMicroelectronics gives unrivalled flexibility for developers building IoT (Internet of Things) nodes by supporting multiple low-power wireless standards and Wi-Fi, while integrating a complete collection of motion, gesture, and environmental sensors, unavailable on other kits in the market.
