January 3, 2005—News of another case of mad cow disease in Alberta, Canada, coincided with an announcement by Digital Angel that it had shipped a total of 265,000 RFID tags designed for livestock tracking to its Canadian distributors during the last two months of 2004. The Minnesota-based company has been quick to leverage its experience in pet tagging to establish itself in the cattle-tracking niche, which appeared after the mad cow disease outbreak of the nineties. CEO Kevin McGrath said of the mad cow case found this weekend, "This cow did not enter the food chain, but even in a rare case, such as this, the existence of the disease reinforces the need for a comprehensive, reliable and effective livestock tracking system. We look forward to working with the governments of the US, Canada and other countries to implement RFID tracking systems as soon as possible."
