RFID Journal Staff asked 15 years ago

I would like to launch a business providing RFID solutions, but I have not been able to locate a good source of market research that would provide information regarding competitors, customers, barriers to entry and so forth. Do you have any suggestions?

There are three major market research firms that cover the RFID market: ABI Research, VDC Research Group and Frost & Sullivan. Each offers detailed information regarding the key players in the industry, as well as the market share and growth prospects for each segment. RFID Journal publishes news stories about these organizations' studies from time to time.

If you are serious about getting into the RFID market, you should get CompTIA RFID+ certified, which will provide you with insight into the technology, and you should also get some hands-on experience.

There are plenty of companies that say they can implement an RFID system successfully, and there are a few that can actually do so. Just keep in mind, this is not like starting a dot.com—there is far more involved than simply writing HTML coding. You need to understand a customer's business processes, the physics involved, how to manage RFID data and how to use the data to drive real business value. This is not something learned overnight.
