Has anyone deployed radio frequency identification technology to manage a fleet of a few thousand two-way radios?

Action Ambulance Service is tagging radios and other equipment (see RFID Rescues Emergency Transportation Service), and there are some fire departments doing the same. The question is where and when you need to locate the equipment.
Reading tags over long distances at an emergency scene would require one type of technology, while checking radios into and out of storage or a vehicle would necessitate another type (see Anaheim Fire Department Deploys Multipronged RFID System). If you could provide more information regarding how you want to track these radios, I might be able to suggest a solution.
