It’s difficult to say anything is “typical” in the RFID industry. I would say that many conventional warehouse-, inventory- or logistics-management applications are client-server-based. And these, to some degree, have been modified to handle RFID data.
In general, applications developed for radio frequency identification tend to be Web-based, and a growing number of companies are moving toward using cloud computing. Xterprise is a good example of a firm that has done this, in order to reduce end-user costs.
