December 7, 2004—California-based label making leader Avery Dennison and active RFID systems developer RF Code of Mesa, Arizona, have teamed to produce an RFID tamper-proof physical asset tracking device aimed at the logistics, manufacturing, and transportation verticals. Called SecureStrap, the product was demonstrated last week at the National Cargo Security Council’s RFID in Real Time conference and Forrester Research’s annual Emerging Technology Showcase. According to the press release, “SecureStrap consists of a radio lock (an active RFID real-time locating device) that is attached to a fiber-optic tamper sensor cable. If the cable is compromised in any manner, SecureStrap will send out a radio distress signal indicating its identification code and a tamper indication signal. An encrypted reset key will allow reuse of the radio lock component of the SecureStrap system.” A picture is available here. No doubt the SecureStrap was borne from Avery Dennison’s RFID strategy to target the homeland security sector; the company is working with the U.S. Transportation Safety Administration to RFID tag shipping cargo that passes through U.S. ports.
