August 2, 2004—A new report commissioned by the U.S. Army that assesses the effectiveness of the war in Iraq cites supply chain logistics inadequacy as one of the operation’s biggest failures. RFID tags were deployed on a wide-scale basis, but due to the use of outdated legacy systems and a lack of RFID tag readers, the data contained in the tags couldn’t be harnessed successfully. At times, supply chain operation was “barely above subsistence level,” forcing Army units to depend on supplies secured from enemy stockpiles.
