September 13, 2004—Sara Lee is a food manufacturer and major Wal-Mart supplier on the front-lines of meeting the retailer’s RFID mandate. A Sara Lee IT expert shares his experience working to implement RFID by the January deadline: he notes that they are using the “slap and ship” approach, and says that almost every other Wal-Mart supplier is too; RFID deployment remains a high-maintenance and time-consuming proposition, one that “is not ready for high volume”; finally, he advises other suppliers considering RFID to take their time and not invest heavily since tags remain problematic and the middleware space is very immature.
