July 28, 2004—While privacy violation is often cited as the biggest hurdle facing RFID, security is gaining ground as another concern. A new program called RFDump, written by security consultant Lukas Grunwald, allows the reading and manipulation of RFID tag data. Grunwald wrote the program to demonstrate the potential insecurity in a world where everything wears an RFID tag. Hackers might one day be able to rewrite the pricing information contained on an RFID tag affixed to a store’s product, for example.
