June 7, 2004—Research firm ABI Research sees the RFID tag market being “up for grabs” until October, when EPCglobal ratifies one of the two RFID standards proposals currently under consideration. At that time, those companies that endorsed the winning proposal will enjoy a distinct advantage over their competitors who are forced to adapt tag design and manufacturing processes to the new standard. There will also be at that time a huge increase in the number of EPC tags produced, leading to a much-needed reduction in tag price.
