August 30, 2004—Philips has sold a near field communication (NFC) chip to South Korea’s Samsung, officially marking the world’s first NFC sale. The technology, which is similar to RFID but both “smarter” and more expensive, will be used in Samsung cell phones to allow consumers to perform such transactions as buying movie tickets or obtaining product information with the mere sweep of their cell phones. Such NFC-equipped Samsung phones should be available in Asia later this year and in the U.S. by early 2005. While still quite young, NFC technology is gaining momentum quickly, thanks in large part to the founding of the NFC Forum in March by Nokia, Sony, and Philips.
