November 7, 2004—After reports last week of a possible RFID tag and hardware manufacturing plant being built in India, more RFID news comes from the subcontinent this week with the formation of the RFID Association of India, or RFIDAI. Established by industry leaders as a not-for-profit organization to guide and promote the use and development of RFID throughout India, RFIDAI’s formation speaks to the Indian government’s and industry’s ever-building committment to the technology. It also reflects a general trend emerging throughout Asian high tech: many governments, including those of Singapore, Korea, and Hong Kong, have announced initiatives aimed at establishing their domestic high-tech industry as the dominant RFID player in Asia. A hot technology with long-term prospects, RFID is perceived as a technology whose market is still young enough to lack a regional leader.
