September 23, 2004—A well-known technological shortcoming of radio frequency identification is the relatively low rate of accuracy at which RFID tags are read. Transaction solutions provider NCR says it has developed a solution to one of the major factors contributing to the industry’s unimpressive 80% read rate average. By identifying and rejecting faulty RFID tags before they are actually used and allowing only perfectly functioning tags to be affixed to products, the problem of “dead-on-arrival” tags is avoided so that 100% of produced tags behave according to specification. The new system, which NCR has been testing for the last six months and which is slated to be shipped in January, will be officially announced at the EPCglobal RFID industry conference being held this week in Baltimore.
