July 8, 2004—A community elementary school near Osaka, Japan, has plans to begin RFID tagging its students in an effort to combat an increasing safety problem. The tags will be attached both to students’ clothing and personal belongings, and the readers will be strategically positioned in locations deemed most dangerous.
