January 5, 2005—RFID manufacturer Intermec Technologies of Everett, Washington, responded quickly three weeks ago when EPCglobal ratified the GEN 2 standard as “royalty-free.” Within 24 hours of EPCglobal’s announcement, Intermec issued a release “congratulating the EPCglobal community,” but noting that, in the words of Intermec CEO Tom Miller, “It is important to remember that the claim of a royalty-free…specification does not mean royalty-free UHF RFID products.” The company has been persistent and vocal about its intention to generate revenues by charging licensing fees for the use of RFID technology included in its intellectual property portfolio of 125+ related patents. The strategy appears to be bearing fruit: Miller expects that the company may sign its first licensing agreements before the second quarter of this year. It’s clear that Intermec will remain forceful in its intention to monetize its IP. Some speculate that its ambitions are as grand as wanting to be for RFID what New York-based Symbol Technologies is for the bar code: gate keeper.
