September 14, 2004—Cofounder of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Auto-ID Center (EPCglobal’s predecessor) made a bold prediction at the Embedded Security Seminar held last week in Boston: the number of annually consumed RFID tags will reach 500 billion by the year 2010. The cost of RFID tags and the annual quantity produced are two closely watched metrics which many consider the most important indicators of the industry’s potential. A couple weeks ago, RFID Journal editor Mark Roberti publicly offered to bet $10,000 that passive RFID tags would be available for a nickel a piece by the end of 2008.
