November 9, 2004—EPCglobal India launched this week in New Delhi at the country’s first ever EPC-based RFID event. Speaking at the event, Kris Gopalakrishnan, COO of giant IT services firm Infosys, noted both the opportunity and challenge posed to India by RFID. While it could allow for India’s proven technology services and labor force to lead in a “new segment of IT hardware” and achieve competitive advantage against manfacturing competitor China, there remained a pressing need for the Indian government to allocate internationally compatible UHF spectrum (a move Singapore made last week). The launch of EPCglobal India comes alongside Monday’s announcement of the formation of the RFID Association of India and just on the heels of recent talk that an India-based RFID hardware manufacturing plant is being considered.
