December 3, 2004—Representatives from five companies presented working Generation 2-compliant RFID hardware prototypes to EPCglobal last week, proving the GEN 2 standard’s viability. Philips, Texas Instruments, Intermec, Impinj, and Applied Wireless Identification comprise a group of RFID vendors that have been actively involved in the EPCglobal standardization process, and each was present at the California testing lab last week to demonstrate their GEN 2 prototypes. With the standard feasibility test passed, only ratification by EPCglobal’s business committee, technical committee, and board of governors remains. Final ratification is expected by year-end. What remains an issue is Intermec’s intention to collect royalties from companies that use its intellectual property in their GEN 2 products.
