July 21, 2004—At the pharmaceutical industry supply-chain conference held this week in Washington, D.C., a number of the biggest names in pharmaceuticals and RFID discussed a pilot project underway to test the possibilities of tagging and tracking individual bottles of drugs. Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Procter & Gamble, McKesson, CVS, Rite-Aid, Accenture, Matrics, and Manhattan Associates are some of the leaders involved in the project, which will conclude in September. Given high per-item value and increasing counterfeiting problems, the pharmaceuticals industry is predicted to be one of the first that implements item-level RFID tracking.
