July 9, 2004—ABI Research has released a new report on near field communications, or NFC, a protocol that uses RFID technology to allow devices to directly communicate with each other. NFC would be a far more consumer-oriented development than current RFID applications, allowing, for example, a user to purchase goods advertised on a billboard simply by swiping his NFC-enabled cell phone in front of the ad. The report predicts that next year the first NFC-enabled cell phones will be sold and that by 2009 possibly half of all cell phones will include the technology.
