September 20, 2004—ViVOtech and Philips have partnered to make cashless purchases using RFID-enabled cell phones a reality. Using a protocol called Near Field Communication (backed by the likes of Nokia, Philips, Samsung, and Sony), the system allows users to swipe their cell phones in front of NFC readers to make purchases of popular consumer items like movie tickets, fast food, and digital content. Under the arrangement, Philips will produce the NFC chips, and ViVOtech will supply the system’s contactless infrastructure. Together, the two companies will both market the novel technology to consumers and enlist cell phone manufacturers and vendors to participate. Implementations in select U.S. markets are planned before year’s end.
