August 5, 2004—As of August 2004, the RFID space remains immature. RFID standards are still being worked out, and, given recent lawsuits, there is the question of whether royalty fees will be required on the most basic RFID components. Despite these uncertainties, many companies racing to meet compliance deadlines are forced to move forward with RFID implementations that may not prove optimal down the road.
