October 4, 2004—In a Monday opinion piece, International Herald Tribune technologist Bruce Schneier comes out strongly against a U.S. initiative to RFID tag passports of its citizens and those of countries that don’t require visas to enter the U.S. He accuses the initiative of being a “sinister” attempt by the Bush administration to increase its surveillance capabilities far beyond what is necessary to increase border security. He writes, “It means that passport holders are continuously broadcasting their name, nationality, age, address and whatever else is on the RFID chip…It means that pickpockets, kidnappers and terrorists can easily – and surreptitiously – pick Americans or nationals of other participating countries out of a crowd.”
