January 10, 2005—According to UK-based technology journal silicon.com, Tesco, the British retailer at the forefront of RFID adoption, has put in an order for 20,000 RFID readers and tags from security solutions provider ADT. The 16,000 tags and 4,000 readers will be distributed across the retailer’s 1,300 stores and 35 distribution centers throughout the UK. The RFID purchase represents the British retail sector’s second largest to date. It also represents a highly visible win for ADT, bolstering the RFID resume of a company historically associated more with security than with RFID.
