May 11, 2006—Savi Technology yesterday announced the deployment of an active RFID solution for Emprevi, a Colombian logistics and security firm. The deployment is aimed at providing enhanced visibility and security for cargo as it moves throughout points in Colombia. Emprevi's clients are both importers and exporters working in the Colombian market, some of whom are major multinationals in the pharma, CPG, food and beverage, and 3PL industries.

The Savi solution being deployed is called SmartChain Transportation Security Solution (or TSS), and it will be integrated into Emprevi's own service offering portfolio under the title "Global Trade Control". TSS will afford Emprevi clients online visibility onto their cargo containers continuously and in real time. Specifically, cargo traveling between the Colombian port of Buenaventura and Emprevi's distribution center in the city of Cali will be monitored.

Beyond supply chain visibility, Emprevi is driving for security benefits from the deployment. The active RFID technology includes exception handling features that can issue alerts when cargo tampering or security breaches are detected. The release says that Emprevi plans to "reduce the potential for drug trafficking and smuggling, theft, loss, or terrorist intrusions." Furthermore, the company believes the enhanced security will help reduce insurance premiums on security.

Recall that last week leading defense contractor Lockheed Martin agreed to acquire Savi (see Lockheed Martin to Buy Active RFID Leader Savi). Though financial terms of the deal were not released, the price is rumored to be around $400 million.
