July 18, 2004—The five-cent cost of RFID tags has been a stated industry goal for the last couple years. It is at that price point that item-level tagging becomes feasible for a broad range of consumer products. But the realization of five-cent tags will no doubt be pushed back if royalty fees are imposed on tag producers.
