Singapore's Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) scheme, a toll-collection system adopted to reduce traffic congestion by charging drivers for use of the roads, was implemented by the country's Land Transport Authority in September 1998.
That system replaced the Singapore Area Licensing Scheme, which was implemented in the 1980s, when I lived in Asia. (Hong Kong considered a similar scheme in that same decade, but it was voted down. A rumor among us journalists claimed that the mostly male legislators were worried their wives would see the bill each month, and know they were visiting their mistresses.)
The technology for the Singapore ERP was provided by a consortium comprising Philips Electronics Singapore, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Miyoshi Electronic Corp. and CEI Systems and Engineering (now known as CSE Global).
