I answered this question back in May of this year (see How Much Do RFID Tags Cost?), but I'll add that we are working on a new report on how to choose the right RFID system, which will be available in January 2010.
The upcoming report will provide a methodology for choosing the proper system, as well as information regarding read distance, location accuracy, cost and other factors that companies need to consider when choosing an RFID system. The report will cover active, passive, battery-assisted and hybrid RFID systems, as well as one or two alternatives to RFID, such as ultrasound.
