September 20, 2004—Since the August release of RFDump, a simple application that allows a user to view the contents of an RFID tag using a laptop, the security questions surrounding radio frequency identification have received increasing focus. RFDump was authored by a security specialist to demonstrate the glaring vulnerability of current RFID tag data storage methods. EPCglobal, the industry association working to develop RFID standards, has taken note, building security mechanisms into its second generation ultra high frequency standard. But some argue that security concerns are overblown, since the nature of data stored on RFID tags — ID numbers and product information — is harmless by itself.
