Symbol buys RFID rival Matrics

July 28, 2004—Symbol Technologies announced Tuesday its intent to purchase RFID leader Matrics in a cash deal worth $230 million. Symbol believes that companies will eventually seek one end-to-end RFID solution provider, rather than mixing and matching various RFID vendors to arrive at the final implementation, as they do now. The Matrics purchase will allow Symbol to offer just such a comprehensive solution.
