October 12, 2004—The news about an RFID tag shortage has caught many off-guard. But is it necessarily bad news for everybody? Some high-volume Wal-Mart suppliers, perhaps having procrastinated and now eager to buy a little time in complying with the RFID mandate, may be able to eek out a concession from the retailer by blaming greater market forces outside their control. Some also see the shortage as potentially slowing the rapid price decline of RFID tags that so many are hoping for.
