February 14, 2005—The product of a government-sponsored survey conducted in the U.K. last year, the British Department of Trade and Industry is backing the construction of an RFID center to encourage development of the technology across the country. Last year’s study included interviews with thousands of businesspeople regarding the future of electronics in the U.K.; automatic identification and RFID were cited often. The new National RFID Centre will be funded by regional agencies and will offer conferences and seminars, serving as a source of networking, information, and development. Already 24 on- and off-line events are scheduled through the end of March. In a sign of the ever-expanding uses for RFID, the center will not focus solely on supply chain applications. The development of manufacturing RFID applications is already underway.
