OPEX Adds RFID to Warehouse Automation Sorting Solution

OPEX has announced that it is expanding the capabilities of its Sure Sort Warehouse Automation solution to incorporate radio frequency identification (RFID), enabling it to help customers increase operational speed and efficiency. The high-throughput sorting system has been deployed for warehouse automation by multiple distribution centers, retail stores and third-party logistics companies, the company reports, for the purpose of boosting order-handling, cross-docking and reverse-logistics processes.

OPEX has added the option of RFID reading capabilities to meet the growing needs of its customers, particularly apparel manufacturers and retailers. Bar codes can end up hidden in garments, the company explains, and thus require additional operator handling, which can slow down operations. Because RFID employs radio waves, such reading does not require a visual connection.

With labor costs and supply chain challenges increasing, OPEX reports, the demand for more responsive warehouse-automation technologies is crucial. The company’s Sure Sort robotic delivery vehicles, known as iBOTs, can accurately process up to 2,400 items per hour with as few as three operators, and the vehicles can recharge while traveling. OPEX exhibited the Sure Sort at the recent NRF 2023 event in New York City, offering a live demonstration of the technology for attendees.
