July 1, 2005—RFID solutions provider ODIN technologies of Reston, Virginia, and giant systems integrator Unisys of Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, this week announced a partnership to provide 24×7 remote and onsite RFID support services, a model the companies are hailing as an industry first. The service has been rolled out for the Creative Interior Designs Division of Thomasville Furniture Industries of Thomasville, North Carolina.

ODIN designed and deployed the RFID implementation, which tags furniture goods en route and upon arrival to customer distribution centers. ODIN also developed the support and troubleshooting program and trained the support staff of Unisys, who will be providing Thomasville Furniture with a 24×7 800-number help desk and 4-hour onsite break-fix service for more serious problems. ODIN will provide fall-back support for the most severe issues. All software and hardware components of the installed RFID system are covered by the support.

ODIN’s vice president of operations and marketing Brett Kinsella considers the support program a new approach in how to think about RFID implementations, telling RFID Update, “It is a testament to the fact that RFID is rapidly becoming a critical operational capability that requires the same up time as order management, WMS and other essential order fulfillment technologies.” He also noted the new support offering’s uniqueness in the marketplace, saying that it “also represents the first availability of a choice for end users to adopt a robust 24×7 remote and on-site support for RFID. Before ODIN and Unisys teamed up, this type of support simply was not available.”
