September 7, 2004—This article considers what have come to be accepted as some of the biggest obstacles to successful widespread RFID adoption: tag prices are stubbornly hanging well above the 5-cent goal; tags themselves are far from perfect, with only 80% to 90% read successfully; liquid and metal, elements found commonly in the supply chain, seriously interfere with RFID tag-reader communication; a standard has yet to be introduced; and finally, the dream of an “Internet of things” remains just that, with few recent developments other than the selection of Verisign as leading functionary.
