January 10, 2005—NASA has completed testing of a system that combines RFID with sensor technology to offer more control over the storage of dangerous chemicals across five facilities of the California-based Edwards Air Force Base. Combining Intermec RFID tags with Oracle middleware, “ChemSecure” aims to detect and react to any abnormalities, such as might result from theft and spills. While the testing was a success, funding for ChemSecure is not forthcoming. The NASA division in charge of the project hopes that the necessary $1 million-plus will become available sometime this year.
