Intermec to Donate 5 of its RFID Patents

September 5, 2004—Intermec, the RFID producer whose June lawsuit against Matrics for intellectual property infringement caused an industry stir, will make five of its RFID patents available royalty-free to the market. The move was apparently done in an effort to facilitate development of the Gen 2 RFID standard slated for release in October, a long-awaited industry milestone which many predict will open the floodgates of RFID production and implementation. None of the five donated patents were cited in the Matrics suit, which will therefore move ahead according to plan.
