November 15, 2004—One of the biggest behind-the-scenes developments in RFID this year was Intermec’s decision to charge licensing fees to companies that incorporate fundamental RFID technology for which it owns the intellectual property. Those familiar with the story will know that the intellectual property in question was actually purchased by Intermec from IBM in 1997. The question is: did IBM make a mistake in selling this IP that will probably be incorporated into EPCglobal’s GEN 2 standard? According to IBM’s Senior VP of Research, no. IBM sees its RFID opportunity in solutions and services, not in hardware. This interview addresses that and other questions regarding Big Blue’s relationship with radio frequency identification.
