October 29, 2004—Apparel-maker VF, whose brands include Lee, Wrangler, Nautica, The North Face, Vans, and JanSport, has signed a three-year deal with leading RFID tag and hardware manufacturer Alien Technology. The terms include the purchase of roughly 600,000 tags per year initially, with that number rising as high as 5 million down the road. VF went shopping for RFID to comply with mandates from Wal-Mart and other retailers. While the first batches of tags will follow the Class 1 specification, Alien assured VF of its ability to provide tags according to the GEN 2 standard once it has been ratified, expected to happen in the coming months. VF’s vice president of information technology said, “Alien’s ability to ensure capacity…helps us manage risk.” Ensure capacity?
