44,000 prison inmates to be RFID-chipped

August 2, 2004—The state of Ohio will deploy at its Ross Correctional Facility a $400,000 RFID-based prisoner-tracking system from Alanco Technologies. Under the new system, inmates wear wristwatch-style bands embedded with RFID tags that allow prison authorities to track their whereabouts. Each device includes anti-removal technology that sounds an alarm if an inmate attempts to take it off.
